The technology sector stands at the forefront of global innovation and progress. Yet, despite the industry's rapid growth and transformative potential, women remain significantly underrepresented in leadership roles. This gender gap not only limits diverse perspectives in decision-making but also stifles the potential for innovation and creativity that comes from inclusive leadership. As organizations increasingly recognize the value of diverse leadership, more women are breaking through systemic barriers and taking on pivotal roles.

Breaking the boundaries: Success stories of Infermedica’s women in tech

At Infermedica, we are proud to champion the career growth of our female leaders, not only at the executive level but also through the advancement of mid-level managers. As a company, we’re committed to supporting exceptional talent and actively promoting from within whenever opportunities arise. This commitment to internal growth is reflected in the success stories of our female leaders, who have embraced new challenges and advanced into leadership roles. We’d love to share the stories of three inspiring women and their career journeys within Infermedica.

Over two years ago, Jennifer Hand joined our US team as an Event Specialist. She was responsible for organizing conferences and other industry events to increase our visibility in the US healthcare market. Her experience as an Event Specialist taught her the value of clear communication, strong organization, and attention to detail - skills that directly translate to her current role. After 1.5 years in this position, Jennifer was promoted to Head of Content and Public Relations. How did she achieve that? Coordinating large-scale events helped her sharpen her ability to collaborate across teams and manage tight timelines, which is crucial for leading content and PR initiatives at Infermedica.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is the importance of adaptability. In a fast-moving tech space, the ability to pivot quickly and align with evolving business goals is essential. Another lesson I’ve learned is the power of storytelling. It’s easy to get caught up in the details of products and features, but connecting with audiences on an emotional level through compelling narratives often makes a bigger impact. Whether it's through content or PR, crafting stories that resonate with people is what drives engagement and builds lasting connections.

The second profile we’d like to present is Kate Smolarek, our Head of Customer & Partner Success, who was promoted after approximately a year of working as a Customer Success Lead. Now, Kate has almost 2 years of experience leading our CS team, which consists of 5 members. The CS Lead role was a great prelude to transitioning into a managerial position. It gave Kate the opportunity to understand team dynamics, improve communication, and effectively manage and track workflow - especially tasks incoming from other Inferteams. She also discovered the great talents within the CS structure and how best to utilize them.

But how do you ensure continued personal and professional growth in such a dynamic industry like tech?

In my experience, it is all about the mindset, both when things go right, and when they go wrong. Every tough situation is an opportunity to learn and test yourself in difficult circumstances—every failure can be turned into a success when conclusions are drawn. Also, putting trust in leaders, asking a lot of questions when something is unclear without fear of appearing unprofessional or unprepared. You make a mistake only when you are the smartest in the room. So walk into many rooms.

In today’s fast-paced, interconnected business environment, the ability to collaborate across various teams is essential for success. Professionals who excel in cross-functional settings bring unique insights that elevate project outcomes. Last, but certainly not least, in our series of success profiles is Chantal Schmalkoke, who was recently promoted from a Senior role to Head of Product Management. Impressively, Chantal held her Senior role for only a few months before her promotion. She joined the organization in 2023 to begin her inspiring journey.

What helped her reach this significant milestone?

In my previous roles, I have always worked as part of a cross-functional team. My ability to understand different perspectives has always helped me to see the bigger picture. Product Marketing is one of the most cross-functional roles that exist, so having that skill was a huge benefit for me and enabled me to also add the perspective of a leader to the mix.

Stepping into a new role and being recognized among colleagues as their leader, rather than just a peer, is undoubtedly challenging. Such transition often brings a shift in dynamics, requiring new skills and perspectives. But how does such a transition change a daily routine?

The biggest lesson I learned is to see my colleagues as individuals. This might sound weird but at work we often think in teams or roles or functions, but behind that is a human with unique strengths and weaknesses and with their own story. Taking the time to truly understand what motivates my team members, what they want, what they need, and who they are allows me to support them as best as I can, and that looks different for each of them.

My advice for women aiming to break into leadership roles in tech startups is to embrace continuous learning and adapt to different situations. The tech landscape is always evolving, and being open to new ideas and skills will help you stay ahead. Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and seek out opportunities where you can showcase your strengths.

Looking for another piece of advice on stepping up in leadership? Kate shares insights that perfectly reflect Infermedica’s core values: trust, transparency, quality, and courage. Her journey reminds us that courage isn’t just about big moments; it’s about showing up confidently and making your voice heard. Here’s Kate’s powerful advice.

Do not be afraid to share your ideas with your leaders, even when you are not sure if they are good. A lot of initiatives which came to life were ideas I shared as a team member, or lower-level manager, with my leadership. Being a woman plays a role only when we allow for it and see it as a factor playing even the smallest part in the perception of the value we bring to the table.

Head of Customer & Partner Success

Stepping into leadership often means overcoming self-doubt, especially for women who may feel hesitant to speak up or share their insights. Chantal has a message for all women aiming to make an impact.

Don't hold back! Be bold, be courageous, be honest—women tend to underestimate themselves. They often feel like they are not in the position to act as an expert, pitch an idea, or criticize something, although they have unique ways of thinking and can add valuable perspectives.
