In our previous article on bridging medicine and technology, we introduced you to Infermedica’s medical team—a diverse group of doctors with the longest-tenured member having been with us for nearly 9 years. Together, they drive innovation every day, helping to shape the future of healthcare through their medical insight and commitment.

In this follow-up, we’ll explore how our doctors blend their clinical practice with work at a tech company, and how working at the intersection of medicine and technology opens up dynamic paths for professional growth.

Blending clinical expertise with product development

In addition to responsibilities, such as medical content creation, product validation, client communication, and leadership, our doctors take on more technical roles by collaborating closely with our product and engineering teams. One such example is the position of Medical Product Manager, which merges the analytical mindset and knowledge of a physician with the user- and tech-focused responsibilities of a product lead.

The position bridges medicine and technology, requiring a strong understanding of user needs, the value the product delivers, and technical possibilities. Unlike standard product roles, it blends hands-on application knowledge with clinical insight, allowing our team to better identify and solve patient and medical staff challenges that align with our mission.

As Medical Product Manager at Infermedica, I decide which new features to prioritize. In addition to the usual PM questions like ‘Will users find this useful?’ or ‘Can we build it?’, I also ask, ‘Is this medically appropriate?’, ‘Does it align with evidence-based medicine?’, and ‘Could it pose a risk to patients?’ These decisions require medical intuition—something doctors are uniquely equipped with.

This kind of multidisciplinary thinking empowers doctors to shape digital health products that are not only functional but also ethically and medically sound.

Building a career path in MedTech

A growing number of medical professionals at Infermedica are successfully charting out long-term careers in tech while continuing and strengthening their clinical offering. One such journey began in 2020 when an ambitious physician joined our Medical Content Team. Initially focused on researching scientific literature and simulating patient scenarios, she gradually evolved into a leadership role where her clinical expertise could be matched with management responsibilities and mentorship.

I began at Infermedica in September 2020, analyzing scientific literature, building the medical database, and simulating patient cases using our tools. I tested our system’s performance and co-created improvements. Now, as a Medical Leader, I also oversee team operations, mentor colleagues, and support career progression.

Many of our doctors also continue clinical practice while contributing to Infermedica’s mission—a combination that brings unique challenges, but also exceptional rewards. The ability to maintain a hospital role while working remotely in a tech company creates a dynamic rhythm between patient-facing care and digital health design. It also ensures that our onboard medical staff are highly attuned with the challenges facing healthcare practitioners and the ever-evolving landscape of the industry as a whole.

Alongside my work at Infermedica, I have been practicing clinically since the start of my career here, initially as a Family Medicine resident, a program I have already completed, and now as a Pathology resident. Balancing these two roles can be challenging, but it is also immensely fulfilling since both hold great importance to me. I can genuinely say that I am living out my professional dreams.

The flexibility of fully remote work and adaptable working hours offered by the company is an incredible advantage that allows me to successfully combine both roles. While the workload can sometimes be overwhelming, working in two distinct areas brings diversity and unique opportunities for professional growth. Moreover, there are days when a challenging morning is balanced by an uplifting afternoon meeting with my team, boosting my mood and energizing me to keep moving forward.

What doctors gain working in MedTech

Working in a medical startup offers doctors new perspectives on global healthcare systems, medical education, and data-driven patient experiences. Many of our physicians have highlighted how day-to-day collaboration with international teams and exposure to diverse case types broadens their understanding of medicine beyond borders. Others appreciate how this environment encourages continuous learning and supports professional growth outside traditional hospital walls.

Working at Infermedica offers great opportunities for professional development. The ability to work remotely provides flexibility and helps to improve work-life balance. Additionally, this work fosters the development of language skills through daily communication and collaboration in an international environment.

Plus, there’s a focus on continuous learning. By studying medical literature and engaging with diverse topics across multiple fields of medicine, I am constantly expanding my own knowledge base and staying updated on the latest advancements. All of this equips me with skills that are invaluable for long-term career development.

In addition to enhancing their clinical insight, doctors often discover skills they wouldn’t typically develop in a hospital—from understanding patient behavior through analytics to mastering the tools and workflows common in agile product teams.

At Infermedica, I have gained two types of skills. First, medical-related insights I’d never encounter in a hospital, like how symptoms vary globally or what patients truly worry about. Second, tech skills like Jira, Scrum, Miro, and even the basics of coding and statistics. These tools and insights change how you see your role. Suddenly, you realize how much of your clinical work could be automated—and you are not the same person anymore.

Starting your MedTech journey as a doctor

For medical graduates or practicing clinicians considering a shift toward the MedTech sector, the first step might feel uncertain, but there are plenty of low-barrier ways to explore the field. Following healthtech companies, watching their career pages, and engaging with their presence on LinkedIn or at industry conferences is a great way to learn how they operate and what kind of talent they’re looking for. The field welcomes not only those ready for change, but also those who wish to expand their impact while continuing to practice medicine. MedTech is a space full of opportunities to learn, grow, and innovate, even for those still connected to the clinical world.
