Innovation in tech

Healthcare is in a pivotal moment, with a shift towards AI-driven digital technologies now becoming essential for any healthcare organization. Whether we're talking about health plans that need to digitalize to remain competitive, or public health systems that need to combat resource and staffing shortages, technology is driving change across the industry.

This year, we asked ourselves, where does Infermedica fit into this new domain? How can we use our 13 years of experience and our expertise in AI-driven solutions to get to the crux of the challenges facing healthcare organizations? And how can our existing marketing-leading tools be adapted to best serve patients, members, nurses, physicians, and healthcare organizations worldwide?

The market-leading tools I’m referring to are our self-service symptom checker and our call center triage tool for nurses. Together, they have been used to complete over 20 million health checkups worldwide. These AI-driven solutions have a proven impact on healthcare outcomes and expenses—see our peer-reviewed research and client success stories below.

But there is always room for improvement.

Our research shows that our call center triage delivers superior outcomes to our self-triage tool. Why? Because of the human element, because of the experienced nurses that are guiding patients/members through each step. Yet, with the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs), we can replicate this element to drive understanding, adoption, and adherence to recommendations via a communicative approach.

Introducing Infermedica 2.0.

By combining Infermedica’s clinically validated medical content, curated with over 120,000 hours of physicians’ work, with the conversational interface of LLMs, which can enhance patient understanding and emulate empathy, we are working to build a solution that brings together the best of both worlds.

A solution that allows the patient/member to interact via chat or voice in a human-like manner while maintaining clinical reasoning and judgment derived solely from Infermedica’s Medical Knowledge Base. We’re essentially aiming to create a user experience akin to ChatGPT but backed by deep medical knowledge with full transparency into clinical logic.

A culmination of 18 months of work, 2024 has seen the solution thrive from an initial concept to the working test model that we have today. We are looking forward to the next phase of this revolutionizing solution in 2025 as we strive to certify our chatbot as a certified medical device.

We’re blending the precision of our clinically validated medical content with the conversational power of LLMs to create a solution that is not only logical but empathetic. This project represents a leap forward in making high-quality, accessible care a reality for patients and providers alike.

Evidence via peer-reviewed research

2024 has been a year of research and learning, and none have been more vital to that than our Value and Impact team. Our medical experts, scientists, and AI professionals have been dedicated to understanding just how AI and digital technologies, including virtual triage (VT), are impacting the healthcare scene through detailed, objective research. To date, our teams have produced 12 peer-reviewed research papers, published in renowned medical journals, such as Frontiers, Telemedicine Reports, Medinformatics, International Journal of Healthcare, Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Hospital Administration, and COVID.

We are at the beginning of the healthcare journey with AI-based virtual triage, which is poised to revolutionize patient and clinician journeys, from initial symptom assessment through complex care management. Our recent research has broken new ground in two areas: care acuity alignment with respect to care de-escalation and escalation, and early detection of leading chronic diseases. By leveraging virtual triage technology to improve care acuity alignment and prompt the early detection of serious conditions, healthcare providers and plans can enhance patient outcomes, reduce costs, and create a more efficient, equitable healthcare system for all.

Celebrating our customers’ success

With over 100 companies using our solutions in 32 countries and 24 languages, we have many success stories to celebrate alongside our clients and partners. From public health and governments to health plans to healthcare providers and more, Infermedica’s world-class solutions are helping patients and members navigate healthcare systems and get the right care at the right time.

I wish I could share all of our partners’ success stories with you, but in the interest of keeping it short, here are just a few of the ways Infermedica is helping healthcare organizations realize their goals.

United States: Optum, a leading healthcare provider, leverages Infermedia’s API to support patient assessment via its self-triage service. Optum has improved the efficiency of clinical workflows with structured summaries of members’ health conditions and recommendations for physicians and nurses, which are integrated with Optum’s Epic EHR system. Using Infermedica Triage, Optum changed the care-seeking behavior of one-third of its members.

Australia: Healthdirect Australia, the national virtual public health information service in Australia, implemented Infermedica’s symptom checker into its nurse triage line and as a customer-facing online symptom checker. Since this implementation, Healthdirect diverts half of emergency calls to less acute services.

Europe: Médis, the most recognized health insurer in Portugal, implemented Infermedica’s symptom checker into its Clinical Contact Center, using digital solutions to complement and streamline processes in its live nurse triage. After using virtual triage, 22% of members changed the level of care that they intended to seek.

DACH: Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), the largest health insurance company in Germany, uses Infermedica’s symptom checker to offer its customers a digital, evidence-based initial symptom assessment. 86% of members are satisfied with the service and 76% intend to follow the recommendations provided by the symptom checker.
