What is "total triage"?

Total triage means assessing patient requests before determining the most appropriate next step in their care.

GP Triage provides practices with a digital front door through which patients can describe their symptoms and needs. Clinical urgency can then be assessed consistently, while appropriate requests can be automatically navigated towards available services and care pathways.

By combining clinical triage with automated care navigation and practice workflow integration, the platform aims to ensure that patients reach the right care, at the right time, through the right pathway without requiring every request to be manually reviewed by a clinician.

How does a digital front door work?

GP Triage gives patients a digital route into their practice, allowing them to submit a request without relying solely on the traditional morning telephone queue.

For clinical requests, the patient completes a structured symptom assessment that adapts according to the information they provide. Infermedica’s Clinical AI Triage technology assesses the information provided and generates a structured recommendation based on clinical urgency.

Depending on the outcome and the practice’s configured pathways, patients can then be guided towards the appropriate next step. This may include urgent or emergency care, a GP appointment within an appropriate timeframe, another primary care service, or self-care where appropriate.

Where a GP appointment is appropriate, GP Triage can integrate with the practice’s booking workflow to offer suitable appointment availability based on the patient’s triage outcome.

The resulting clinical information is then available to the practice team, giving clinicians a structured summary before the consultation and reducing the need to repeat information already provided by the patient.
